Green Quartz

Green QuartzQUARTZ (var. GREEN)

HISTORY, NAME, LOCALITIES: Green quartz is the uncommon, green variety of quartz.  Its name alludes to its color.  Green quartz has relatively few collecting localities, with notable sources in Brazil, Switzerland, Russia, and the United States (Maine, New Hampshire, North Carolina).

MINERALOGY, PROPERTIES, OCCURRENCE: The physical properties of green quartz are the same as those of quartz [silicon dioxide, SiO2], with the exception of its diagnostic, green colors which are created by the inclusion of microscopic, green crystals of chlorite minerals (a group of closely related, basic magnesium aluminum iron oxysilicates).  Green quartz crystallizes in the hexagonal system and occurs mainly in granite pegmatites and metamorphic environments as short-to-long, horizontally striated, hexagonal, prismatic crystals with pyramidal terminations and good transparency.  It colors range from the palest shades of light green to greenish-black.  It has a Mohs hardness of 7.0, conchoidal fracture, vitreous luster, and specific gravity of 2.65.  Green quartz is the green variety of macrocrystalline quartz and must not be confused with chrysoprase, the green, gem variety of microcrystalline quartz (chalcedony).

METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES, LORE, USES: According to metaphysical beliefs, green quartz helps to stabilize emotions, transform negative energy into positive energy, achieve goals of prosperity, and accelerate psychic healing.

COLLECTORS’ INFORMATION: Green quartz is collected for its unusual colors and high degree of crystal development.
