APATITE-(CaF)

HISTORY, NAME, LOCALITIES: Apatite-(CaF), pronounced APP-a-tite (cee-ay-eff), was recognized as a mineral species in 1788 and originally named “apatite” after the Greek apatç, meaning “deceit,” an allusion to its confusing similarity of form to beryl and other species.  It was later renamed “fluorapatite” before being assigned its current name.  Although abundant, apatite-(CaF) does not often develop collectible crystals.  Important localities are in Germany, Brazil, Russia, Pakistan, Australia, and the United States (California, Maine).

MINERALOGY, PROPERTIES, OCCURRENCE: Apatite-(CaF) [calcium fluorophosphate, Ca5(PO4)3F] is the most abundant phosphate mineral.  It is a minor accessory mineral in many igneous and metamorphic rocks, and the primary component of massive formations of phosphate-rich sediments that were deposited by ancient seas.  Apatite-(CaF) crystallizes in the hexagonal system as short-to-long prisms with pyramidal terminations and has a Mohs hardness of 5.0, poor cleavage in one direction, and a specific gravity of 3.1-3.2.  It is translucent to transparent with a wide range of pale colors, most notably yellow or yellowish-green.

METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES, LORE, USES: Metaphysical practitioners believe that apatite-(CaF) enhances insight, learning abilities, and creativity; increases self-confidence; helps to achieve deeper states of meditation; and heightens the metaphysical properties of other minerals.  Apatite-(CaF) is the primary component of phosphate rock which is mined worldwide as a source of industrial phosphorus compounds.  Apatite-(CaF) crystals also serve as a minor gemstone.

COLLECTOR’S INFORMATION:  Collectors value both singular and composite specimens of apatite-(CaF) for their rarity, colors, and crystal form.
