Pentagonite Crystal Mineral Specimen

PENTAGONITE

HISTORY, NAME, AND COLLECTING LOCALITIES: Discovered in the early 1960s, pentagonite was recognized as a distinct mineral species in 1973.  Its name stems from the Greek pente, meaning “five” and referring to the five-fold shape of its pseudopentagonal, twinned crystals.  It is a rare mineral that is known to occur only in the United States and India, with the latter providing all collectible specimens.

MINERALOGY, PROPERTIES, OCCURRENCE: Pentagonite [hydrous calcium oxyvanadium silicate, Ca(VO)Si4O10·4H2O], pronounced penn-TAG-oh-nite, is a rare, bright-blue, vanadium-containing silicate that crystallizes in the orthorhombic system as showy sprays of small, sharply pointed crystals of unequal lengths.  Pentagonite crystals are almost always twinned into a five-fold, pseudopentagonal symmetry.  It has a Mohs hardness of 3.0-4.0, good one-directional cleavage, a vitreous luster, and a specific gravity of 2.33.  Pentagonite’s diagnostic, vivid-blue color is due to the essential element vanadium.  It has a micaceous or leaf-like crystal structure and is a member of the phyllosilicate subclass of silicates.  Pentagonite occurs exclusively as a secondary mineral within vesicles in basalt, often in association with zeolite minerals.  Pentagonite is dimorphic with cavansite; both have identical chemistries and crystallize in the orthorhombic system, but vary in their lattice structures.

METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES, LORE, USES: Pentagonite has no technological uses.  Metaphysical practitioners believe that pentagonite stimulates intuition, heightens psychic awareness, enhances channeling ability, rids the mind of negative thoughts, inspires new ideas, and calms and centers the mind.

COLLECTORS’ INFORMATION: Pentagonite is collected for its rarity, unusual crystal habits, vivid-blue color, and dramatic color contrast with its matrix of white or colorless zeolite minerals.
