SULFUR

HISTORY, NAME, LOCALITIES: Sulfur has been known since antiquity.  Its name stems from the Latin sulpur, a word that is thought to refer to the material.  The “sulfur” spelling is used in technical literature, while “sulphur” still persists in general usage.  Notable collecting localities are found in Italy, Poland, France, Japan, Mexico, and the United States (Utah, Wyoming, Texas, Louisiana).

MINERALOGY, PROPERTIES, OCCURRENCE: Sulfur [native element, S], pronounced SUL-fer, crystallizes in the orthorhombic system as steep bipyramidal or tabular crystals, and also in granular, compact, and earthy forms.  It has a Mohs hardness of 1.5-2.5, poor cleavage, a conchoidal fracture, and a specific gravity of 2.0-2.1.  Sulfur is transparent to opaque, has a resinous-to-dull luster, and colors that range from bright-yellow to brownish-yellow, reddish-yellow, and brown.  Sulfur is deposited as a direct sublimation product of volcanic gases, and also forms through processes of organic chemical reduction in sedimentary beds in association with limestone and gypsum.

METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES, LORE, USES: Sulfur has been used since antiquity in medicine to treat infections, joint pain, fevers, skin ailments, and respiratory problems.  According to modern metaphysical beliefs, sulfur absorbs negativity and aids in the discovery of its causes, controls anger and negative outbursts, and helps to achieve inner peace.  Sulfur is mined for many industrial and manufacturing uses.

COLLECTORS’ INFORMATION: Sulfur is collected as a native element and for its bright-yellow, transparent, well-formed,  bipyramidal crystals.
