Blue Lace Agate Sterling Silver Pendant

BLUE LACE AGATE IS A FORM OF:

QUARTZ (var. BLUE CHALCEDONY)

HISTORY, NAME, LOCALITIES: Blue chalcedony has been known since antiquity.  Chalcedony, pronounced kal-SED-oh-nee, is the microcrystalline form of quartz [silicon dioxide, SiO2].  The name “blue chalcedony” refers to its color.  Blue chalcedony is collected in Malawi, Namibia, Turkey, and the United States (Washington, Oregon).

MINERALOGY, PROPERTIES, OCCURRENCE: The physical properties of blue chalcedony are the same as those of quartz], with the exception of its diagnostic, pale-blue color.  Blue chalcedony has a Mohs hardness of nearly 7.0, a conchoidal fracture, waxy luster, and a specific gravity of 2.65.  Its color, a soft, delicate blue with hints of purple, is due to the interference of light caused by reflection from the interfaces of interlocked microcrystals.  Blue chalcedony occurs primarily as nodules and lenses in sedimentary formations when colloidal silica suspensions lose water and solidify into masses of microcrystalline quartz.

METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES, LORE, USES: According to metaphysical beliefs, blue chalcedony is a stone of gentle energy that adjusts the balance between the body, mind, and spirit; reduces hostility, anger, and irritation; and promotes mental and emotional stability and honesty.  Blue chalcedony is gaining popularity as a gemstone and is fashioned into beads and cabochons.
