Serpentine Tumbled Gem Stone

Serpentine:

Serpentine is dark green mineral that is often mottled or spotted like a snake’s skin, hence the name, serpentine. From the Latin serpentinus, meaning “serpent rock”, from the Greek word “serpens” meaning snake. It has a strong association with activating kundalini energy in which in turn would open and balance all of the chakras. The color green itself is associated with healing and growth.

It is said that the Romans used this stone as protection against sorcery and the dark arts. They made vessels out of serpentine, as it was believed they would shatter if they came into contact with poison. In the Middle Ages, serpentine was used to house medicine as it believed to increase the healing powers of whatever medicine it held. It has been used in China and India in carvings and temple decorations.

The serpentine group is comprised of several related minerals that are a hydrous magnesium iron phyllosilicate. The two most common minerals in the serpentine group are antigorite , a leafy serpentine and chrysotile, a fibrous serpentine. Others are amesite, cronstedtite, fraipontite and nepouite. The colors are white, yellow, green, gray, brown, black, purple and often a combination of green and yellow.
